Our learning AUTUMN 2

Autumn 2

In RE our topic is Sign and Symbols. We are going to look at the symbols of Baptism and think about how we can be like Jesus. We will then look at Judaism before moving onto the topic of Advent.

This half term the Year 2 children will be exploring towers, battlements and maybe a secret tunnel or two in our new topic Tower, Tunnels and Turrets! We’ll learn all about the different parts of a castle and describe how they have changed over time.

In Literacy, the children will be focusing on diary entries. We will be continuing with capital letters and full stops, working independently, and re-reading our work to check it makes sense and make any improvements. We will also learn how to use powerful adjectives and adverbs to make our writing more interesting. We will read ‘The Princess and the Pea’ by Rachel Isadora. Please continue to support your child’s reading and spelling.

We will also be focusing on preparing for our Phonics assessment this half term. To find out more about phonics and the new scheme the school is using, please click here.

In Mathematics, the children will be looking at addition and subtraction and learning new methods in order to answer more difficult questions. We will then move onto looking at money and working out different values and change.

In History, the pupils will be learning about events beyond living memory. In particular, we are learning about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot and discussing whether he was a villain or merely a political activist.

In DT The pupils will be learning about which shapes are used when constructing a bridge. The pupils will then design and build their own bridge from lollipop stick and PVA glue.  .

In Computing, pupils will be taught about searching, sharing and using email safely online.

In Science, the children will be carrying out a variety of simple tests with more independence. They will be creating different types of bridges and discovering that engineers use triangular shapes to strengthen bridges.
