Year 5 Trip to the Recycling Centre
On Tuesday 27th February, Year 5 went on a trip to the Veolia Recycling Centre, in line with last term's topic of materials, and to help us write our persuasive letters on recycling this term.
What a fantastic day it was! We learned all about why we recycle in Southwark, the different materials we can and cannot recycle, through a workshop and a tour of the intriguing centre itself.
We were split into two groups, where the first half took part in a workshop where we learned how the machines in the recycling centre separated the rubbish 300,000 people living in Southwark discard of on a daily basis; the other group went on a tour of the centre itself. Halfway through, we swapped so we could all have a tour of the centre. We had to wear hi-vis vests, hard hats and had over-head earphones in order to hear our tour guide as the centre was monumentally noisy!
Capping off our fantastically informative day was a test! We had to sort our rubbish from our packed lunches into the correct bins. I think it's fair to say we had a great day where we all learned about the goings-on inside one of the UK's largest recycling centres!
